July Music

Here's my take on the CD I sent out, and some representative tracks for each artist/album:

John Legend – Get Lifted
If you listen to anything off my CD, make it this one. I think the entire album is great, so I can’t even give you the best 3 songs. Just let it play. Note: produced by Kanye West.

G Love – The Hustle
If you listen to 2 albums off my CD, make this one of them. Highlights are: “Booty Call”, “Give it to You” (with Jack Johnson), and “Fishing Song”. I don’t think anyone can play the harmonica quite like him.

Peter Malick Group – New York City
If you listen to 3 albums… no just kidding. This album is a great jazz collaboration with Norah Jones’ vocals. The best song is “Deceptively Yours”, but they’re all great. The only song I’m not really into on the album is “Things You Don’t Have To Do”, but actually, I didn’t even include it. So, you’re welcome.

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here
Classic. Just let it play (like you should all other PF albums). It’s one of Pink Floyd’s top 3 albums in my opinion. “Wish You Were Here” is one of my favorite PF songs.

2 Skinny J’s – A few songs from two albums
They’re all good, but one you MUST listen to is “3 Minutes”.

311 – One of my favorite bands of all time.
Just threw a few lesser (or un-) known songs for yall. The Omaha Sessions album is a collection of their earliest songs that were either never released, or independently released, or older versions. I could have just put out a CD of all of their music, but I figured many people have their more popular albums, so I’d just give you something you’ve probably never heard from them before. Check out “Summer of Love”, “Gap”, and “Strong all along”.

Alice In Chains – MTV Unplugged
I’m not really an AIC fan, but I love this album. Good songs (usually) sound GREAT when acoustic. “No Excuses” “Got Me Wrong” and “Heaven Beside You” are the standouts.

Ben Harper – Welcome…
His first album. A Classic in my opinion. It is rather slow and mellow, but also excellent. Check out “Breaking Down” and “Forever”.

Bob Marley – Kaya
“Kaya” is my favorite Bob song of all time. You will recognize many of the others too.

Collective Soul – Blender
This album is surprisingly good. (Some of the songs are skipable, so I just included a few) There’s only 4 songs there, so a top 3 would be a waste of my time. Kind of like how I wasted my time telling you that it’d be a waste of time to talk about it.

Creedence
Classic. Again, just let it play. Don’t be afraid to sing along.

Donovan Frankenreiter – S/T
I think someone might have included a few of his songs before, but I like the whole album. The great ones are “It Don’t Matter” “Free” (with Jack Johnson) and “What’cha Know About” (with G Love).

Thicker Than Water Soundtrack
One of the best surfing films ever made, and a great soundtrack. The movie was done by Jack Johnson, and you should check it out. “Rainbow” and “Honor and Harmony” are great, and the beat to “My Guru” is phenomenal; it will get stuck in your head. Someone will probably rap over it someday.

Incubus – Make Yourself
One of my top 10 albums ever made. You’ve probably heard some of them, but the best ones are “Privelege” “The Warmth” and “Pardon Me”, but listen to the whole thing.

Kottonmouth Kings – Hidden Stash
Just a few standouts from this album. Thanks to Jacob Radsick and the Insane Clown Posse for introducing me to these super-stoners. “Tell Me Why” “Dying Daze” and “My Mind Is…” are all great.

Sublime
Just a few good ones I cam across. We’ve all probably heard their S/T album. Listen to “Doin’ Time (Uptown Dub)” while you’re drivin your Cadillac down the street with your pimp hat on.

Enjoy the music (if you haven’t already done so)

Just finished throughly listening to the July disc here are my thoughts......

John Legend
Not exactly the type of music to which I normally listen, however, that being said, Legend seems to have a natural gift writing for the piano. The Lyrics leave a little to be desired as do the guest appearances by Snoop and Kanye. Legend should stick to backing up West, Common and other established artists. His pianos add a touch of class to thier hip hop but on his own he's not strong enough to be a legend.

G. Love
Probably the best G. Love disc since Philadelphonic. Last September I caught G. Love, Donavon Frankenreiter and Jack Johnson perform together. G. Love blew me away. Maybe because my expectations were low as I'd heard from several people that his live shows were kinda boring. Not at all the case this show. He was running around stage and radiating more energy then Jack and Donovan combined. He even broke into several minutes of freestyle about Cleveland. The three of these guys hanging out together and putting out records on their own has obviously ignited some sparks as all three put out great albums last year, the Hustle maybe the best of the three.

The Peter Malick Group Feat. Norah Jones
Again, not something I'd pick up on my own (which is why the club is great), and it's solid. Norah Jones is rare in today's mainstream culture as she is genuinely talented and not just a piece of ass. Images of smokey clubs and cocktail waitresses come into my mind while listening to the light jazz of Peter Malick. If I was mature enough to have a dinner party several tracks on this record would make the rotation.

Pink Floyd
Do I even need to say anything about Floyd... no.

2 Skinnee J's
One of those bands that reminds of the Ranch and Strawberry Jam. Good times.

311
Wish I remembered seeing them in Jersey last summer... Damn you, all day tail-gating!!

Alice In Chains
Unplugged was the only positive thing MTV has ever done for music. Although I'm not a big Alice in Chains fan, they put on a nice live acoustic performance.

Ben Harper
Fucking awesome. My favorite album of his is Fight For Your Mind, but Welcome to the Cruel world is a close second. Mama's got a girlfriend now is a welcome light point in an otherwise somber album. Pleasure and Pain is nothing short of remarkable.

Bob Marley & The Wailers
Can't go wrong with Marley. Back in the day I used to hate him because he stole glory from Desmond Decker and others like Jimmy Cliff. But bottom-line Marley made great music that has stood the test of time.

Collective Soul
Surprisingly liked this more than I anticipated. Actually Collective Soul has done that before. It's dangerously close to dentist office music which may be reason for such low expectations. The handful of songs included this month prove iPod worthy.

Creedence Clearwater Revival
Why do so many bands cover "I put a spell on you?" No one can touch Screamin Jay Hawkins; Creedence included. The rest of the disc contains everything you'd expect from Creedence. Lots of classic songs most of which I heard first as punk covers or in cheesy movies.

Donavon Frankenreiter
Cool chill-out music. My favorite is Our Love and I love Free but cringe because now it reminds me of Verizon wireless. The songs Ben mentioned are good too, the whole album is solid.

Thicker Than Water (soundtrack)
Haven't seen the film, however I've seen September Sessions (his other film). Sessions was cool because it wasn't an "X"treme sports bullshit parade. It was just beautiful shots of surfing very tranquil, sublime and awesome. I'll have to watch Thicker Than Water in fact I just moved it up in my Netflix queue. The collaborations of G.Love and Jack are great and the whole album exudes calm happiness.

Incubus
One of my all-time favorite albums. Totally kicks ass. There were a few months in college when I listened to this album 3 or 4 times a day. It also reminds me of a very specific incident which will remain nameless.

Kottonmouth Kings
Reminds me of being jolted awake in college at 2PM. Damn you Radsick!!

Sublime
Music and popular culture would be a different place if Bradley hadn't passed.
