New Club Distribution?
A friend turned me on to a site called www.yousendit.com. Essentially you can upload up to 1 gig for 7 days and have up to 25 downloads. A link may be posted on our site.
Possibly, whoever's month it si could upload there selection and post it for everyone to download, possibly saving time, money, and effort.
I have no idea how well or fast the service is or if it will adequatley serve our purposes.
I tried a test of uploading Eminem (sorry, it's the only thing I had here at work for the moment).
It took probably 8 to 10 minutes to upload. I imagine that 1 gig will take some time. One other thing. You can only upload one file, so any group of files will have to be compressed using Winrar or Winzip.
Try to down load the following link so we can get an idea if this actully works:
https://s56.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1GB392R3YD7IA1GDE4O1XH5N1Z
Another alternative is trying to get our own ftp site where we could do essntially the same thing.

The file downloaded in about 10 min.
I'm all for digital distribution. It's faster, easier, cheaper, etc. etc. I already pay for server space so we could use ftp.jameskurtz.com/music. If we go this route I'd have to limit the uploads to 1GB to avoid paying extra monthly fees.
There are two issues I can think of:
1. Technical know how. If you don't know how to use an FTP client then it will be a problem. But only a small problem and one that is easily solvable. simply learn how to use one. I'll gladly walk anyone though the steps needed.
2. Technical equipment. Some of use don't pay for internet and only piggyback on our neighbors connections (brad, I'm looking at you). This is a little more difficult, but not much. Everyone, obviosly since you can read this, has access to the internet at some point. Whether it's at work, your friends or the corner coffee shop you should be able to upload and download these files. If we use my server space then we won't have to worry about yousendit's 7day window.
What does everyone else think????
actually I just checked how much data transfer I pay for and as long as we don't start spreading the download link all over the web then we could set the upload limit to 3GB. Which is way too much music anyway.
Also you would need to zip the file here as well.
Oh, one more thing, .Mac just started a new service called groups. It is specifically designed for small groups like us to converse and cordinate schedules. I will look into it, we could possibly move over there when/if we decide to go digital transfer.
I don't have much experience with ftp, however from what I've heard its not that complicated. One of the only issues that I have to deal with is that I only have computer access at work. Even if it is a large file I think I can get away with starting it in the evenings and simply let it cook overnight. As far as tranfering from work to home, you can go to newegg.com and pick up a 1gig USB mini drive for your keychain for around $50-$60. Its faster than burning cds and less waste. Plus you always have someting for data storage wherever you go.
Brad you are a low tech pirate and obviously not geeky enough for this club. I am staging a mutiny and forcing you to walk the plank.
This is all well and good, but makes no sense to me. You lost me at FTP something or other. Sounds like I'll need a procedure manual to figure it out. While I enjoy my computer and its capabilities, I really only use it for about 1.5% of those capabilities. I'm still down with supporting the postal service for the time being.
sounds like the us postal service wins again.
Fine you fuckin dick, fuckin cockaos.
You sit in your tower and try to create something like club de la musica ftp'ing.
Cock pushups?
