Back to the Music

Getting back to music for a minute...
I saw the Arcade Fire last Saturday night, at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, and it was flippin great!! I know I probably say this every time, but it was honestly an amazing show. For those of you who don't know them, or much about them, they are an 11-piece band (in concert) from Montreal. Having 11 people on stage at once might seem like overkill, but it never feels that way. The cool thing is that throughout the show, each of them are moving around switching instruments for different songs. The drummer on the last song is now the keyboardist, and the keyboardist is now banging to the beat on a giant symbol (or the floor, or the stage structure itself), and the guitarist has moved to the drums... etc, etc, etc.
They had some great video going in the background as well as some great lighting. The crowd was really into it, chanting along with most every song. Case in point was the last song before the (inevitable) encore. I can't remember what song it was (it'll hit me next time I hear it), but the crowd was chanting along until the end. The band exited stage left, but the crowd continued to chant the song. About 5 minutes later (still chanting), the band re-enters the stage, only to complete the end of the song to a chorus of cheers. After a few more songs, they exited again. We all wanted more, but The Man has an 11:00 noise curfew in effect. Crows lights up... bye-bye.

Anyway, GREAT show. I've never seen Radiohead in concert, but dare I say, I imagine this show might be similar to a Radiohead show a few years ago.

Unfortunately, this was the last show of their North American tour, so you will have to wait a while if you missed it. I implore you to buy a ticket next time they come around.

Not sure how many are in the band on their recordings. Probably not 11. I do know, however, that the main two are a husband and wife team.

Ben, I'm insanely jealous.

They were just on Fresh Air (an NPR radio show) a couple days ago. You can download the podcast for free on iTunes. I'm listening to it now...
