Postal Service vs. Apple
The new Apple ad bares a striking resemblance to a Postal Service video. Postal Service has formally complained but not yet taken any legal action. The wierd thing is that both films were made by the same director.

Well, that begs the question, Who actually owns the rights to the video... or actually, the inspiration or idea??? Now, I haven't seen either, but I'm willing to bet that the Postal Service has no real case here, unless the two videos are retartedly similar. Also, I guess technically TPS is selling a product thru their video, but it's not like they're in direct competition. That said, TPS still has 'ownership' of their work. But here is a gray area. The director is the same person. If you hire this guy, you do it because you like his work. And if his work includes a Postal Service video that you like, he's going to use that to make his client happy... thus, you MIGHT get a similar video. I guess we'll see how it plays out, but to the director: Dude, get creative. Don't just regurgitate one (similar) product over and over again. Mix it up a little.
Right... so now I realized that jimmy provided links to both videos (very thorough by the way, James).
Retartedly similar?? Yes.
I have 3 theories:
1) Apple was on set during the filming of TPS video, and was like "hey, why don't you make us one of these too."
2) Apple took video clips from TPS video, and inserted their own audio (because I swear the chick in both videos is the same person)
3) Apple saw it and said "hey, it sorta looks like they're makin' computers in that video... we should do that, cuz WE make computers"
Either way, both videos were filmed in the same place, without a doubt. I think the female 'character' is the same in both. And the majority of the shots in the Apple video are EXACTLY the same as TPS. If I was them, I'd sue Apple.
