It is a legal download site from Russia. You can get songs for about $0.10 a piece. An entire album may be about $1.50 and at the moment it is totally legal.

It has to do with a loop hole in Russian copyright law. Things like dvd's, cd's, tapes, etc. are under copyright protection, but digital information is not and Russia is showing little intereste in changing this.

So you can get high quality mp3's with no spyware, viruses, or fear of litigation. You can even choose the format as well as the file quality.

I am currently trying it out and am liking what I'm seeing. Let me know what you think.

Fuck Sony, We'll Do It Ourselves

My Morning Jacket has initiated its own recall of DRM-infected CD's, since Sony hasn't exactly lived up to its recall promise. The band is actually sending anyone who contacts them with a copy-protected edition of "Z" a burned copy that is free of DRM. And I'm sure that, in no way, shape, or form, is Sony footing the bill for these burned copies.

Also, I happened to be on amazon dot com today, and found their album. It seems that Amazon is still selling the copy-protected version. Doesn't make sense to me...

Damian Kulash, from Ok Go, wrote a must-read editorial in the NY Times about DRM and its effect on the musicians. This is the best arguement (that I've seen) against DRM from the other side of the pond.
