SUFJAN STEVENS ALBUM "ILLINOIS" NAMED INAUGURAL
NEW PANTHEON MUSIC PRIZE WINNER

ELTON JOHN, ELIJAH WOOD, JOHN LEGEND, SUZANNE VEGA
AMONG THOSE SELECTING SUFJAN STEVENS

NEW YORK, March 31st, 2006 - Sufjan Stevens' breakthrough album "ILLINOIS" has been named winner of the inaugural New Pantheon Music Prize. Sufjan Stevens' "ILLINOIS" emerged victorious from a field of formidable New Pantheon finalists, including albums by Arcade Fire, Fiona Apple, M.I.A., Antony and the Johnsons, and others. In recognition for winning the first New Pantheon Music Prize, Sufjan Stevens will be awarded a cash prize of $5000 and the New Pantheon Music Prize trophy.

Ninety-one initial nominations for the New Pantheon Music Prize were announced in December, and then ten Finalists were announced in January, as selected by a special Panel that included important recording artists, actors, and music journalists. Among those who served on this year's inaugural nominating Panel were Beck, Keith Urban, Margaret Cho, Dave Matthews, ?uestlove, Ric Ocasek, and Shirley Manson. Most of the Nominators selected Sufjan Stevens as one of their Top 3 favorite records from amongst the ten Finalists.

New Pantheon co-founder Tom Sarig explains that "We set up the New Pantheon simply to spotlight, honor, and grow the audiences for some of the most remarkable music of the last year. Thank you to our incredible nominating panel for generously giving of their time. They nominated an incredible slate of artists' albums, and ultimately the records which became New Pantheon Finalists have proven to be among the most important music to be released in the last several years."

Although the New Pantheon Music Prize is not holding a concert event this year, due to logistical reasons, plans are already underway for next year's proceedings. Sarig added that "It's our first year for the New Pantheon and our intention has always been, and will continue to be, to foster a completely independent, totally organic environment where creative people can recognize the achievements of their peers, while helping further expose the musical leading lights of the past year to a wider audience".

Sufjan is exactly the sort of artist that the New Pantheon Music Prize was meant to honor. "ILLINOIS" is an incredibly ambitious and complex work, sophisticated in terms of melody and arrangement, and consistently surprising. Without a doubt, Sufjan is one of the most significant voices in music today.

New Pantheon's comprehensive website (www.newpantheon.net) features RSS feeds from nominees' sites and from influential music news sites and blogs, as well as interactive samplings of nominees' music and videos. The New Pantheon website also enables users to browse of the nominations made by each Nominator.

Radiohead

Radiohead has announced upcoming tour plans and potential digital music releases to avoid having to "wait 12 months for a full-blown album". I checked radiohead.com, but I've never been able to navigate that goddamn site successfully. Let me know if anyone knows the tour schedule.

Can we have the Mailing Schedule readily available... maybe on the left side under the Links or something like that. I find it hard to remember the schedule, and also hard to find when I want to know who's sending me musica next... just a thought

January Disc

Brad, I know you think you had a weak effort, but Gogol Bordello is one of your best inclusions thus far. It makes me want to put my arms around whoever is next to me, kick my feet in the air and spill copious amounts of beer.

"We are definitely a very New York type of combination of characters. Definitely more New York than motherfuckin' Strokes or some shit like that. We seem to appeal to all kinds of guys and girls doing strange hats. Lots of strange hats. It seems to be lots of Brazilian and Eastern European and all kind of drunk Italians and Mediterranean immigration transplants, as well as what you call fuckin' hipsters here. " - Gogol Bordello

The Ads

I noticed that we now have ads for Beer!!! Technology amazes me... I posted the Heineken thing this morning, and they're already trying to sell us more... If only every time I thought of beer, a little man appeared who wanted only to sell me beer...

so close

If Apple's new mac mini (announced yesterday) could run cable TV and record shows as a DVR it would be the best media center available. Why the hell do they keep leaving these features out?!?!?!

Gasp !?!

For all you fellow Heineken lovers out there, they have released Heineken Premium Light... I already consider Heineken a light-ish beer, but apparently the "popularity" of Light beers and gatorade-wannabe-thirst-quenching-beers (see commercial with 'extreme' rollerblading during lunch... "If this is your idea of a power lunch, then this is your beer... Michelob Ultra"), has forced Heineken to some desperate measures. I'm not really sure what to expect, but it's worth a shot.

Interesting to note that in Holland, Amstel Light is known as just Amstel. Same beer, same packaging (minus the deletion of "Light")... It's just more marketable in the US as a Light Beer...

Dave Chappelle's Block Party

I'm sure everyone here is aware of this movie, but if you haven't seen the trailer, here it is...
