Quick reviews of some new releases

Nine Inch Nails // With Teeth
I've always sat on the metaphorical sidelines when it comes to NIN. Never really a big fan, not a hater, just kinda in the middle. The Downward Spiral was a great album, With Teeth is a good album. The first song starts slow but it's worth the wait, great opener. About half way through the album it starts to loose steam as some of the tracks become skip-able. The first single, The Hand That Feeds, is a solid effort but not the best NIN single I've heard. Which sums up the album pretty well, good but not the best.
7/10

Stephen Malkmus // Face The Truth
It seems like this album is a retrospective of Malkmus' carreer. There are songs that sound like they should be on Pavement albums while others are more reminiscent of Pig Lib. The guitars take a backseat to the song writing this time and his vocals are more "in-tune" then ever. Overall a solid record and I can imagine it will be blasting out my car stereo with the windows down all summer.
9/10 until, like all of Malkmus' stuff, it grows on me then it will be 10/10

Quasimoto // The Adventures of Lord Quas
Schizophrenic fun! Madlib has officially become my favorite hip-hop artist. The album starts of strong and keeps gaining momentum until the last track. MF Doom shows up for a bit and there's just something about his voice over Madlib's beats that's gold. Pray to the music gods they make another Madvillain record. Even without the Metal Face the record never stops spinning. I predict it will show up on best of 2005 lists everywhere.
10/10

Weezer // Make Believe
Where'd the loud guitars go? The trademark distortion of Weezer is sorely lacking and when it does show up it's weak as fuck. The song writing is the worst of any Weezer albums and the whole thing sounds like they don't even care. There's no energy. Die-hard Weezer fans will probably like this as will a casual pop music fan (because it's familiar). For everyone else it's un-listenable crap.
1/10

Common // Be
Most people hated Electric Circus, I loved it, it was daring and original. This album is a return to the more soulful Like Water For Chocolate. Kanye West's production almost overpowers the fact that it's a Common album. Nevertheless it's a solid record with every track listenable while Common presents himself as the Marvin Gaye of hip-hop.
8/10

Gorillaz // Demon Days
How a cartoon band can pull of a dramatically sad record that's tons of fun is amazing. De La Soul, MF Doom, Booty Brown and Roots Manuva more than make up for no Del. Dan the Automater's absence is unnoticeable, Dangermouse's production is thicker and better. The only former collaborator noticeably missing is Ciba Matto's Miho Hatori. Dennis Hopper even shows up for a spoken word song. Feel Good Inc. is well on it's way to being the single of the year. The only negative thing I can say is that, like their last album, this will be played out.
10/10

Anyone heard Sleater-Kinney // The Woods? I've heard good things...

Props for the past two months

D, Nice work on the music last month. I haven't listened to it all yet but I LOVE Madlib's reggae mix, Jaylib, Quasimoto and Illogic. If you have anymore Illogic albums hook me up. I went to Amazon and they don't carry anything by him and some of the used records are going for $100. What's up with Boom Bap project? I know nothing of them but enjoyed it immensely.

Climber, Finally I see why Shadow gets such respect. I've heard his two newer albums which don't even touch Endtroducing. Is Silence! The Musical movie any good, does it even exist? "In the dark with a maniac" is super funny, my favorite line is "Would you fuck me? I'd fuck me, I'd fuck me real hard!" SLC Punk soundtrack was a nice addition as well. Overall I'm impressed with the wide variety of music you included.

Lord Quas

This review of Quasimoto's new album was originaly from othermusic.com:

All right kids, gather 'round. Here's a little story....
Once upon time there was a guy named Otis Jackson Jr., who lived in the warm city of Oxnard. Late one night, while the stars sparkled in the California sky, he stumbled upon a box of electronic equipment, a collection of educational, theatrical, soul and psych records, a crate of bootleg DVDs, a forgotten bag of herb, a fresh bag of shrooms, and a post-it note stuck to the sampler saying that "Melvin Van Peebles called." Once Otis consumed the whole bag of shrooms, smoked all the herb, watched the DVDs, and sampled all the records, as well as calling Van Peebles back, something happened. He could only open his eyes about halfway and he began to grow pink fur and a snout. Excited about the transformation, Otis stared at his reflection in a mirror through his half-parted eyes and began to rap. It was here that he noticed a more startling change; his voice was higher pitched, as if he had inhaled a helium balloon. In order to deal with these transformations, he chose the name Quasimoto and took to the streets, butter knife in one hand, sampler in the other, in search of The Unseen. This was in the year 2000 and he has been sought after, and discovered, a few times since then.

First, the producer du jour was spotted wearing his Madlib disguise while hanging out with cohort Chris "Peanut Butter Wolf" Manak. Then he was reported posing as a whole band called Yesterday's New Quintet, looting the vaults of Blue Note Records. Of course, there was his appearance in Detroit, crate digging with James Yancey (aka Jay Dee, aka J-Dilla) as the duo Jaylib, and then he was spotted in London under the name DJ Rels. Most recently he could be found on a surveillance videotape, lifting comic books with the infamous Daniel Dumile (aka MF Doom), the clerk at the store says they used the name Madvillain.

In 2005, Quasimoto has resurfaced with yet another name, now simply known as Lord Quas. He was last seen in public spray-painting "Free Steady B" on the streets outside an area called "The Lost Gates." This is the further adventure of Lord Quas...if you see this man, don't fear, he isn't dangerous, just extremely cerebral, quirky, and skilled. He may appear playful at first, but he means business. Don't try to contain him, just buy a CD or two and let him be on his way. Oh yeah, make sure to ask him if he has anymore of his hip-hop and jazz mix CDs....

T-Shirts!!!

Some of you have asked me where I get my T-shirts. Mostly I get them from Threadless. It's an ongoing design competition and they only print limited runs so it's unlikely to see anyone else wearing your T-shirt around town. Plus if any of you click on this link and buy a shirt I get a $3 credit... so click away and get me a free shirt; if you do there will be talk of blumpkins for appreciation.

Bitchin

I am know going to do what I do best... Bitch
It is the 5/2/05 and Club de la music knows who the weak link in the chain is. It is Dylan. I have not received any music from him. He has officially broken the chain. Receiving full benefits as a member of the club but extolling none of the virtues. I hope this peer pressure motivates him to finish his duty as a member of the club. P.S. He might wake up next to a horse's head if he's not careful. i.e. the godfather. So hurry up before ze Germans get here Dylan.
