New York gets into the act

New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer got involved in the Sony BMG debacle, sending some of his associates, disguised as consumers, to a multitude of record stores (or stores that music can be bought at) in New York to buy some of the albums that "used to be" infected with rootkits. Now, we all know that Sony recalled all of the infected albums right?? And at this point we should be able to trust Sony again right?? I mean they are trumping even GW in the bad press category of late. They should be cleaning this mess up right?? Well, no. For some reason Sony refuses to recognize the severity of this issue, for they still have infected CD's out in the market. Eliot Spitzer's gang were able to purchase affected CD's at most major retailers. And let's not even mention the fact that these CD's are still present during the biggest shopping weekend of the year!!

Waxed

Wax on... Wax off... no more, for Mr. Miyagi is dead.

I'm not sure if anyone here is a Entourage fan, but in an odd sense of deja-vu, Mr. Miyagi is dead (for real this time). I believe it was in the Playboy Mansion episode, in which Johnny Drama is trying to mend his 'relationship' with Hef, so he can attend a Playboy party, that Johnny (who heard from someone else) tells Ralph Macchio that Mr. Miyagi is dead. However, when Ralph calls one of Mr. Miyagi's relatives about it, she is unaware, and freaks out. Well, Ralph, you can make that call now...

Postal Service's Gold Album

For Sale!!! My favorite part of the ridiculusly stupid description is "I believe that as a man you should lead by example so for my first foray into “world betterment” as I like to call it I have decided to start my own publicity and marketing company."
Waaahhh?!?!? Now, that's just downright funny.

Craigslist

Gotta love the hippies. They've figured out the interweb!! Check out this post from craigslist. Trey Anastasio (formerly of Phish) is playing here sometime soon, and this guy wants tickets.

A non-Sony post

So, the band Hot Hot Heat has been recommended to me by Amazon as well as Yahoo music, and I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on them. I've heard a song or two, and I think they could be decent, but I also think they could get annoying if the entire record sounds like those songs. Any info appreciated.

Also, I've been told by a (somewhat unreliable) source that the band My Chemical Romance is pretty good. I would prejudge it to be some sort of power pop, or pop-wanting-to-be-punk, but I've actually never heard any of their stuff. Let me know. Thanks.

More Sony Madness

Sony is getting worse PR than George Bush these days. Check out thier EULA (end user lisence agreement).

My personal favorite is: "If your house gets burgled, you have to delete all your music from your laptop when you get home."

Sony Music Sued Over Anti-Piracy Software

Jonah Flicker and Amy Phillips (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com report:

In the slow and perhaps inevitable movement towards microchip implantation of the entire human race, Sony BMG Music just took the lead. According to the Washington Post, a class action lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court November 1 alleges that the label's anti-piracy software, installed in several recently released CDs, is harmful to computers.

The suit claims that when a copy-protected CD is loaded onto a hard drive, it installs a hidden program known as a "rootkit," which not only keeps track of the computer's activity, but depletes the drive's resources in the process. So Sony is basically eating up your hard drive space while keeping track of all the porn you watch, just because you actually spent money on a My Morning Jacket CD.

Thanks, guys. This is even better than getting the RIAA to sue us.

The rootkit also makes the computer more susceptible to viruses. Sony falsely states that its copy-protection software can be easily removed, when in reality, getting rid of a rootkit can be damaging.

Here's the crux of the suit, straight from the legal papers: "As a result of Sony's failure to disclose the true nature of the digital rights management (‘DRM') system it uses on its CDs, thousands of computer users have unknowingly infected their computers, and the computers of others, with this surreptitious rootkit. This rootkit has been responsible for conflicts within computer systems, crashes of systems, and other damage."

The suit, which accuses Sony of "fraud, false advertising, trespass, and violation of state and federal statues prohibiting malware, and unauthorized computer tampering," claims that the suspect software has been included on certain Sony BMG Music CDs since this spring. Albums to watch out for include Amerie's Touch, My Morning Jacket's Z Kasabian's Kasabian, Neil Diamond's 12 Songs, Cassidy's I'm a Hustla, Kings of Leon's Aha Shake Heartbreak, and, appropriately, the Bad Plus' Suspicious Activity and the Coral's Invisible Invasion, among others.

In short: if you're about to load that new My Morning Jacket disc onto your hard drive, STOP. Sell the album back to the record store and buy something on Dischord.

Fear the Bobcats

You'll get the pun when you read the article.

I know this blog is supposed to be all about Musica, but I just can't help myself. I also know that a bunch of us are Ohio U alums, and even if you're not, you have to appreciate what this means for a MAC school. Anyway, I went to espn.com, and what do I see on the "front cover" (aka espn homepage) but the OU Basketball Team!!! It's 8:30 right now on the West Coast, so if you don't go here soon after that, there will undoubtedly be another article on the front page. If there is nothing about OU on that page, try here, where you will be brought directly to the story. Sorry, it's probably NEVER happened before, so I must revel in it. And I don't want to jinx the season (eventhough we'll probably fuck it up), but who knows... maybe OU will help you win your NCAA Tourney Pool this year.

Caught in the Act...

Sorry for the delay

October's discs are being mailed today. My itunes organized all the songs into folders. By the time I figured out how top keep this from happening; I already made most of the discs. This should not really be a problem and if it is I will resend cd's to all that require them.

One idea I had and wanted to throw out to everyone is that if everyone has a DVD drive on their computer, then sending mp3 DVD's may be an option. I know that I have many complete discographies and could share those. For instance, if anyone wants the complete Tool, Pennywise, Primus, NOFX, etc. then we could make that happen.

I no longer have access to, but have used Emule for a P2P service. This is a freeware version of Edonkey without any spyware and I have yet to get any kind of viruses. I encourage everyone to check it out.

That being said, I hope everyone enjoys this months selections.
